October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month

ARTICLE | October 10, 2024

As the leaves change and pumpkin spice takes center stage, October brings something even more important: Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Since 2004, this has been a time to remind us to stay vigilant online. In today's connected world, safeguarding your personal and business information is more crucial than ever. Here are a few tips to help you stay secure this season.

1. Passwords: Your First Line of Defense

    • Use strong, complex passwords: Include upper/lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Aim for 10+ characters.
    • Avoid reusing passwords: Include upper/lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Aim for 10+ characters.
    • Consider a password manager: This simplifies password management.
    • Don’t write passwords down: Avoid storing passwords on sticky notes or unsecured devices.
    • Change passwords regularly: For sensitive accounts, update passwords every 90 days.

2. Enable Multifactor Authentication (MFA)

    • Turn on MFA for an extra layer of security. It requires not just a password, but a second verification step (e.g., a code sent to your phone).

3. Secure Wireless Networks

    • Hide your Wi-Fi network (SSID): Prevent attackers from creating fake networks with the same name also known as a Man in the Middle attack.
    • Disable automatic connections: Manually connect to Wi-Fi networks to avoid connecting to rogue hotspots.
    • Use personal hotspots instead of public Wi-Fi: Public networks are often insecure and can be manipulated by hackers.
    • Consider using a VPN: A Virtual Private Network encrypts your data, especially when working remotely.

4. Avoid Phishing Attacks

    • Check for emotional triggers: Phishing emails often provoke anxiety with subjects like “Your Account Is Compromised.”
    • Verify the sender: Look at the email address to see if it matches the company.
    • Check the salutation: Generic greetings (e.g., “Dear customer”) are red flags.
    • Hover over links: Ensure links direct to the legitimate website.

5. Protect Your Identity

    • Get an IRS Identity Protection PIN: This adds security when filing taxes. IRS PIN Link
    • Freeze your credit: Control who can access your credit. Credit Freeze Guide

6. Encrypt Your Devices

    • Use encryption tools:
      • Windows: BitLocker
      • MacOS: FileVault
      • iPhone: Encrypted by default
      • Android: Enable encryption in settings
      • Chromebook: Built-in encryption
